NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY LOS ANGELES TIMES AND BUZZFEED • Taking place nearly a century before the events of A Game of Thrones, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms compiles the first three official prequel novellas to George R. R. Martin’s ongoing masterwork, A Song of Ice and Fire. These never-before-collected adventures recount an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living consciousness. Before Tyrion Lannister and Podrick Payne, there was Dunk and Egg. A young, naïve but ultimately courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals—in stature if not experience. Tagging along is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg—whose true name is hidden from all he and Dunk encounter. Though more improbable heroes may not be found in all of Westeros, great destinies lay ahead for these two . . . as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits.
Featuring more than 160 all-new illustrations by Gary Gianni, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a must-have collection that proves chivalry isn’t dead—yet.
Praise for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
“Readers who already love Martin and his ability to bring visceral human drama out of any story will be thrilled to find this trilogy brought together and injected with extra life.”—Booklist
“The real reason to check out this collection is that it’s simply great storytelling. Martin crafts a living, breathing world in a way few authors can. . . . [Gianni’s illustrations] really bring the events of the novellas to life in beautiful fashion.”—Tech Times
“Stirring . . . As Tolkien has his Silmarillion, so [George R. R.] Martin has this trilogy of foundational tales. They succeed on their own, but in addition, they succeed in making fans want more.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
“Pure fantasy adventure, with two of the most likable protagonists George R. R. Martin has ever penned.”—Bustle
“A must-read for Martin’s legion of fans . . . a rousing prelude to [his] bestselling Song of Ice and Fire saga . . . rich in human drama and the colorful worldbuilding that distinguishes other books in the series.”—Publishers Weekly

Solid Novella collection
A lot of people expected a lengthy addition to the world of A Song of Ice and Fire without realizing what this actually was: a collection of short and straight forward novellas that focus on a hedge knight and his squire during the Blackfyre rebellion, long before the events of Game of Thrones takes place. There’s still politics and it’s tied to the history and lore of the series -there’s always some Targaryen drama afoot - but it’s about the lowborn’s place in the game of thrones. The politics are there, but from an outsider’s perspective. Dunk is no lord or schemer, just a hedge knight trying to make it from one meal to the next. As a long time fan of the books I felt it was refreshing and interesting to have the POV of the small folk getting wrapped up in the drama of warring lords, kings, and usurpers. Not shocks or huge surprises if you know GRRM’s work and style, but a fun bite sized narrative. I hope we get more in this series eventually.

Short
Generally a good read with strong characters and plots, as you would expect. But there’s mind-numbing repetition of some key phrases (eg, Dunk the lunk, over and over). And it’s astonishingly short—feels like a cheat, honestly.

i really enjoyed it. i can’t wait to read the next part.
if you like the game of Thrones books it’s great

Confusing & Interesting
This is one of GRRM’s best works. Unlike the other I’ve read, this one is completely interesting. However, the story seems to change at points and can be very confusing, especially toward the end.

Beautifully written
The story is a good one but not terribly compelling or a real page turner. That being said, the writing is just short of poetic. The pictures George RR Martin paints are so clear you can almost smell the sweat and dung. And it is delightful to have so many wonderful graphics to illustrate what the author sees. I do recommend it especially for fans.

Want More!
This was a great book. Would like to read more about Duncan and Egg and their travels through Westeros.

If you're reading this you've obviously read GOT. I gave it 4/5 because of GRRM, he's a fantastic author who makes it hard to put anything he writes down, but this didn't have the unpredictability of GOT. All together, good book, nice that it falls in GOT realm.. just kinda lacks the GOT part

Great read and well written makes me wish I'd been born to be a knight!

More Than I Was Expecting
4.5 stars I'm a fan of Game of Thrones, but I haven't read any of A Song of Ice and Fire. I thought I would check out this prequel before diving into the main books. I really liked it, way more than I was expecting, especially the further I got. All the main family names that everyone is familiar with are there, but the characters are new. I love Dunk and Egg. I recommend this book to fans of historical reads with knights, battles, sword fights and such. And the friendship between Dunk and Egg is great, venturing on bromance. I'll definitely be reading more from this universe.

I enjoyed the read to the extent that I was disappointed it ended so quickly. Felt the price too high for the length. A fun read though for GOT fans.

Great book!
Read it in one day. I hope upon hope you will continue this story. The only thing is that it wouldn't open on iBooks so I bought it on kindle for iPhone and read it. Still love iBooks though.

Tremendous!!!
After reading this book I actually found myself crying that the end had come of the adventures of Dunk and Egg but then I saw the postscript and realized that there was more to come. This is one of the very best quick paced and adventurous tales I've read. Both Ser Duncan and young Aegon make a fantastic team and the whole story had me glued to reading it non stop. Please write another book concerning these two. If you love the world and tales of Grr, then you simply will love this classic tale - and if not I will give you a clout in the ear that you will never forget! LONG LIVE SER DUNCAN AND HIS LITTLE FRIEND AND SQUIRE, The future King Aegon, the fifth of his name !

A New Westeros Epic Begins
I thoroughly enjoyed following Dunk and Egg on their adventures. Any George R.R. Martin fan should appreciate these tales. They are fun and a little more light-hearted than the Ice and Fire series.

Short but sweet
I preordered this book after binge reading the 5 book set of Game of Thrones. I won't lie, it was a disappointment being so short for that price. I ended up paying the equal of two books of the five book set. That being said, the book was as enjoyable a read as all of the other books I have read by George RR Martin so far. Set 100 years before the Game of Throne series, the adventures of Ser Dunk and Egg were interesting and the characters endearing.
